General Information
Santorini is an island at the south end of Cyclades. It is not a usual island and this is because of its geological morphology, the result of a volcano explosion. The thick lava of the volcano came out from the depths of the earth, raised through the sea and created the red-black volume of ground, with steep precipices and hard imposing colours.
The island complex of Santorini constitutes of three islands. "THIRA" the main island, "THIRASIA" a smaller one, and "ASPRONISI" a small uninhabited island. These three islands are the remnants of the large prehistoric island called Strongilli (meaning round) due to its round shape and later called Kallisti (meaning beautiful) because of its beauty. Around 1450 BC, after a big volcano eruption, the center of Stroggili sunk in, and an aquatic extent appeared identified as Kaldera. Centuries later erected as volcanic cones the islands "Old Kameni" and "Nea Kameni", where the crater of the current volcano is.
Santorini is 128 naval miles from Piraeus port, covers an area of 76 sq. km, and the length of the coasts is 70 km. On the west side of the main island Thira there are big cliffs with white houses build even inside the rocks. The east side on the counter has big beaches others sandy and others with pebbles. The main mountains on the island are "Megalo Vouno " and the "Gavrilos".
Fira is the island capital. A most beautiful village with winding narrow streets, arcades and a fantastic view to the gulf where Kamenes islands are. Fira is also a very cosmopolitan place.
Santorini produces wine, tomatoes and fava (yellow pea).
