Alonissos is known for its outstanding natural beauty. The southern regions of the island are full of pines with peripatetic paths, beautiful landscapes and beaches with crystal clear waters. <\/p>\n
Because of its position, Alonnisos always has been an Aegean Sea roads\u2019 passage. Throughout history it was given various names such as Ikos, Euonymus, Liodromia, Chiliodromia. Should not be confused with the ancient Alonnisos, which probably was the nearby island Kyra Panagia. It was a trading post during Minoan era and thrived due to the development of the viticulture and the wine for which it is famous until nowadays. Kokkinokastro spot is considered to be the one of the ancient city of Ikos, where have been found remains of the fortification and the buildings.<\/p>\n
In 1992, the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades<\/span> was established to protect Monachus Monachus, one of the most rare mammals in the Mediterranean. The Marine Park is a unique habitat that besides the protection of the Monachus Monachus, it deals with the research and care of Mediterranean monk seal and other species.<\/p>\nPatitiri<\/strong> is Alonnisos\u2019 capital, port and the island\u2019s commercial center. Its name derives from the grape mills that used to be in the area.<\/p>\nChora or Alonnisos<\/strong> is the old capital of the island built onto the top of the hill with the traditional settlements of stone built houses with colorful windows and doors.<\/p>\nAlonnisos is an ideal destination for hikers. \nPiperi island is the centre of the Marine Park. Its steep shores form various caves, where the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus Monachus and other rare birds find shelter. The island is covered by a dense pine forest.<\/p>\nGIOURA<\/span>
\nAn island with steep shores and peculiar mountainous relief. Gioura is home to rare wildlife goats and various rare species of birds. It is believed to be the place of the cave of Cyclop Polyphemos. Inside, there have been discovered significant findings of human activity dating back to 9.000 BC.<\/p>\nPSATHOURA<\/span>
