Ithaca is situated northwest of Kefalonia from which it is separated by a narrow channel of 3,5km. Even though Ithaca is so small, she is world known as the island of Odysseus, the mythical hero of Troy and king of Ithaca. Ithaca is a symbol of nostalgia and love for the homeland.

Ithaca is constituted by two peninsulas joined together with Aetos isthmus. Ithaca is a small marvel of nature full of oppositions and colours, green and blue.

Vathi, the capital of the island has traditional Ionian architecture houses and is built around an extraordinary bay with the islet Lazareto in it.

Sights

  • At the top of the hill Aetos near Vathi, are the walls of the ancient acropolis of Alalkomenon. The locals name it the “Castle of Odyssey” and it is believed that it was the palace of king Odyssey.
  • Nymphs cave (Marmarospilia). A cave with stalactites, where according to mythology, the nymps Naides were worshipped and where Odysseus hid the gifts of the king of Phaeacans when he returned to Ithaca.
  • Loizos Cave. Copper and clay vessels where found in the cave entertained today in the Archaeological Museum of Stavros.
  • Karaiskakis house (Hero of the Greek revolution in 1821)
  • Monastery of Panagias Katharon, protector of the island
  • Paliochora. The medieval capital of the island where one can see the ruins of medieval houses and churches with remarkable Byzantine murals.
  • Kioni. Traditional settlement with a graphic port.
  • Church of the Dormition – Anogi
  • Church of the Dormition – Perachori with wooden temple
  • Archaeological Museum – Vathi
  • Archaeological Museum – Stavros
