Geographic Regions of Greece

Geographic Regions and prefectures

Greece consists of nine geographic regions. The criteria for this division were mainly geographic and historical. Thus areas belonging to a geographic region may have common geomorphological and climatic elements or may be defined by natural boundaries like mountains or rivers.
The present day administrative division of Greece was shaped by the “Kallikratis” program. According to the program, Greece is administratively divided into decentralised administrations, regions, prefectures and municipalities (source Ministry of Interior).
